FAQ

Do I need any experience to get involved?

Not at all, we welcome everyone whether you've climbed for years or you've never seen a rock before. Our experienced members are more than willing to help show new people how it all works. A lot of us hadn't climbed before we joined SUMC, so we're used to helping get new guys into climbing!

Do I need to buy loads of expensive gear?

No, the club owns as much gear as you'll need to get climbing indoor or out and as a member you can borrow it whenever you need (except for when it's required for club events). A lot of members choose to buy their own shoes/harness etc as they get more into climbing and want to have something more comfortable, but there's no requirement to.

What happens on a weekend meet?

Our weekend meets run from the Friday evening to Sunday night. We've written a short guide to how they work here.

I'm coming on a weekend, what do I need to bring with me?

You kind find a basic kit list on our Meets Info page. If you don't have everything, don't worry, we can often find things for you to borrow, just get in touch with the Meets Sec.

How do I find out about upcoming events?

All upcoming events will be listed on this site, on the Events tab. Information on what's coming up is sent out via email and our weekly newsletter (just tick the box when you sign up to the website) and is also uploaded on our blog. You can also follow our updates via Facebook.

What does my Membership Fee get me?

Membership fees go towards subsidising transport and events throughout the year, providing all the club's gear and affiliating the club to the BMC. You can find a full list of membership benefits here.

It's halfway through the year/I'm only here for a term, can I still get involved?

Yes, we do offer a discounted half-year membership. For more info get in contact with the Treasurer.

I've got more questions, where can I get help?
