Hey guys, a very belated Happy New Year and welcome along to our first newsletter of 2015! Our featured photo this week is of Ben crushing it at Wied Babu on the Malta trip, can't believe this was nearly a month ago... Hopefully everyone's getting through the exam blues (only a week to go!) and is ready for an exciting second semester of SUMC action. And we've got a lot of exciting things to tell you about...
There's just over 4 weeks until the club's AGM. This is one of the most important nights of the SUMC year, where you guys get to elect your committee for next year. It'll be held at 7pm, Wed 25th Feb in the Main Physics Lecture Theatre 46/3001. It would be great to see as many of you there as possible, it really does make a difference to the way the club will run next year.
Obviously if we're going to have elections, we'll need some people to do the jobs! If you fancy giving something back to the club, being on the committee is one of the most rewarding things you can do. It's hard work, but amazing fun and if you think there are things we can do better, then it's your chance to put a stamp on the way the club does things. The positions up for election:
President, Vice-President, Treasurer, Meets Sec, Indoor Sec, Bouldering & Comps Sec, Social Sec, Safety & Skills Sec, Gear Sec, Promo Sec, Webmaster
Over the next few weeks we'll be putting up some detailed job descriptions for all the positions on the website so you know what you're getting youselves into. In the meantime, if you're considering running for something or just want more info, then come and have a chat with one of the committee and we can answer any of your questions!
It's the third round of the London Universities Bouldering Event on Sat 7th Feb at Craggy Island, and we need a team of keen boulderers to send along. LUBE is a fantastic, friendly comp and normally has a great set of routes and we've always got space for people to get involved. No matter what grade you climb, if you fancy having a go at a bouldering competition, get in touch and we'll start getting a team together!
Indoor trips were supposed to return after exams, but as Martin has already let you guys know, due to massive psyche we're running a Reading Trip this Thursday. Signup goes up 7am Monday!
Boulder Nights will be returning on Mondays after the end of exams. First night (26th Jan) will be a casual boulder, and we'd love to see you there. As usual we'll have a few guys on hand to give tips an pointers to anyone who needs them.
This term we want to turn our coaching efforts over to improving climbers. Towards the end of February we'll be trialling a couple of evenings where you guys can do some individual work with our coaches-in-training. These wil be aimed at those who perhaps have plateaued in their climbing or who have a specific route they want to get done. It'll probably be run in very small groups (~3 per coach) and we'll watch you climb and hopefully give you some things to work on to improve. On top of this we'll be putting on group coaching sessions covering different aspects of climbing, from methods of physical training to advanced techniques for steep ground. We'll be putting a list of possible sessions up on Facebook soon for you guys to vote on and the most popular ones we'll run, so keep an eye out!
Our First Aid and Self-rescue courses this term are now all full, it's great to see so much psyche for these! If there's anyone signed up who can no longer go, please make sure you let the committee know as soon as possible so we can organise a replacement if necessary.
We've heard that there were many more people still keen to do a self-rescue and ropework course. We are looking at the possibility of running another one of these in the summer term, so if you would want to sign up to this if it ran again please send us an email so we can judge whether the numbers are worth it.
Finally for those still needing an exam pick-me-up, Alex has been awesome and arranged a 50% off party at Scoops on Portswood Road on Sunday. If you like ice cream, and more importantly not paying very much for it, you're welcome to join us from 6 tomorrow. Facebook event: https://www.facebook.com/events/1411081665851769/?fref=ts
