Apologies for the awkward timing of this Newsletter - I was waiting on a few things so that they could be included. A busy few weeks coming up!
A big bunch of buddies bundled into the Botany Bay Hut last weekend. Those of us in cars had already set to work warming up (smoking out) the hut with the fire-place that caused the death of the toaster the previous year (read the journal!). On Saturday morning, in classic SUMC 2017/18 style, the weather was rubbish in our chosen location so we drove somewhere else! Embracing our Mountaineering namesake, we headed up Pen-y-Fan, starting in rain, encountering thick fog then 20mph winds and snow in temperatures below zero. After I’d bored a few people on the way down by discussing with them (telling them) the advantages and disadvantages of softshell clothing systems we headed to the pub to watch the rugby with the locals.
The weather on Sunday couldn’t have been more different to Saturday, with it almost being too hot on the rock, causing jackets and hats to be thrown down into the mud below. Harry, Angus and Jessie get the d***s of the day award by making a 1 or 2 pitch route last 4 pitches and taking all day to do so, ending with a trudge back to the carpark in the dark.
It’s time to cover yourself from head to toe with love for SUMC! Our promo sec, Cara, has designed some awesome hoodies, t-shirts, beanies and stickers for you all! Order them here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSe3G7d7e61_Uf72wuc7IiOo021HJvBSGRrZciyKFI9C_6R4zA/viewform
Donation from Dan Hunt’s parents
As many or you know Dan Hunt passed at Christmas last year. His parents kindly gave the donations from the funeral to our club to use with one condition: to get as many new people as possible into the sport Dan loved.
Currently, the money is left unspent waiting on the best idea of how to spend it. We would like as many ideas as possible on how we can spend this money to get as many new people into climbing as possible. This could range from hosting an event, running a special trip or anything else you can think of.
Let us know any ideas you have by filling out this form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1YFe9RTV8vJ8NScKXzErrViNieYQ-yp3m7fPKi44GQok/edit
Monday Night Sessions
We would like to utilise our Monday night slot in the University Bouldering wall on a weekly basis this semester. Every week at least two members of the committee will be present at the wall from 7pm, and you can use this time to come and socialise, get help on your projects or even learn some rope skills (message me before if there’s something specific you would like to learn).
Our annual club photo is taking place on Monday 26th February at 10am in the Team Southampton Sports Hall. The photos will be available to buy afterwards so make sure you’re there with your best smiles and SUMC Tops! https://www.su-mc.org/events/club-photo/
World Class Gritstone climbing! We’ll be in the roaches from 16th – 18th February, and the sign-up is live on Monday 12th February: https://www.su-mc.org/events/wye-valley-1/
Arguably the best social we run. It’s happening on the 19th February! https://su-mc.org/events/ceilidh-w-salsasoc/
The ropes course is a must for anyone who wants to learn how to climb safely and independently. It’s happening on 25th February at only £40, so don’t miss the sign up on 19th February: https://su-mc.org/events/ropes-self-rescue-course/
Our annual varsity comp against Portsmouth is coming up in March! Keep an eye out for more info as it comes.
